Castro Pleads Not Guilty to Corruption Charges

Carlo Daniel (Dan) Castro, a high-ranking Philadelphia police official pleaded “not guilty” to charges that he tried to have a “collector” use threats to recoup thousands of dollars from a failed real estate deal.

Castro, 47, an inspector who headed the traffic division, entered the plea before a federal judge on Monday.

He's facing bribery and extortion charges.

Castro had been held on house arrest since an initial court appearance Friday. But on Monday, a judge ordered him released on bail pending trial.

Castro's attorney, William Brennan, says his client is not a danger to the community and is not a flight risk.

Prosecutors had argued that Castro is accused of encouraging the use of force and should be kept on home confinement.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said Friday that he plans on firing Castro within 30 days.

"His badge will be taken and will not be reissued to anyone in this department," Ramsey said. "It will be destroyed along with the others who have dishonored this department."
