Del. Teen Killed While Waiting for School Bus

A teenage boy died Monday morning after being struck by an out-of-control car in Newark, Del.

Bruce Mutter, a sophomore at Dickinson High School, was waiting at his bus stop at Old Baltimore Pike and Whitaker Road around 7 when a vehicle driven by 21-year-old Malcolm Deshields hit the 15-year-old, state police said.

Deshields' 1996 Acura TL for reasons unknown, allegedly crossed into the westbound lane of Old Baltimore Pike while still traveling eastbound. The car then entered a ditch before finally crossing Whitaker Road and striking Mutter.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mutter's family said they were fighting to have the bus pick him up at his house, which was three houses from the corner bus stop where he died, but the school district made no changes.

Deshields was taken to Christiana Hospital where he was treated and released for minor injuries. Delaware State Police charged Deshields with one count of operation of a motor vehicle causing the death of another person.

He was arraigned and released on $1000 unsecured bail.
