Car Strikes Man, Crashes Into Store

An accident in South Jersey on Saturday sent a man to the hospital and caused major damage to a local store.

It happened at the Gelco furniture store in Toms River at the corner of Hooper and Oak Avenue around 5:17 p.m.

Police say that 60-year-old Israel Lindner was sitting on a bench in front of the store. As he was sitting, 58-year-old Patricia Anderegg of New York was driving her 2009 Mercedes into the parking lot.

Investigators then say that Anderegg accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the break. That caused her car to accelerate, striking Lindner and crashing through the front windows of the store.

Police arrived at the scene and transferred Lindner to the Jersey Shore Trauma Center. His condition is unknown at this time.

A customer at the store at the time of the accident was struck by debris but she refused medical attention.

Anderegg was not injured during the crash. Police say that she has been issued a summons for careless driving.

The Toms River Building Department deemed the store building unsafe until repairs are made.
