Canoeist Drowns in Central NJ Waterway

Three men were attempting to paddle a canoe in the Manaquan River

Rescue crews have recovered the body of a New Jersey man who apparently drowned after the canoe he was in capsized this weekend.

State police say 21-year-old Aaron McLoughlin of Long Beach Township and three friends were attempting to paddle the canoe from Treasure Island in the Manasquan River to Maxson Avenue Beach in Point Pleasant when it began taking on water near the Point Pleasant canal entrance around 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Rescue crews spent several hours looking for McLoughlin before he was found by state police divers. An autopsy was to be performed Monday.

McLoughlin's friends -- two men from Princeton and another from East Windsor -- were able to make it to shore safely, authorities said. It was not immediately clear what caused the canoe to capsize.
