Affordable Grocery Store, First in 50 Years, Opens in Camden

A new supermarket officially opened in Camden Tuesday, more than one year after the New Jersey city’s only grocery store closed, leaving an entire community without an option for healthy food shopping.

Local officials expect the new PriceRite -- the first supermarket to open in Camden since the 1960s -- to contribute to the city's revitalization.

“A local grocery store is an anchor to any community and is critical for the residents of Camden,” said Camden Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli Jr. "This is not only a tremendous asset to area residents, it is another example of the renaissance taking place here and the investments being made in Camden City."

Along with the new PriceRite, a ShopRite will open in Camden in 2016. The two supermarkets  will provide grocery options to residents of Camden, which spent 13 months without a supermarket after a Pathmark closed in 2013.

“Last year’s announcement that Pathmark was closing brought the term ‘food desert’ home for too many Camden residents, taking away their only access to fresh produce,” said Democratic New Jersey State Sen. Donald Norcross in a news release. “Healthy nutrition and affordable options are critical to an individual’s well-being.”

At least 33 percent of the city's population live more than one mile from a large grocery store or supermarket.

The flagship location is approximately 43,000-square-feet -- about 10,000-square-feet larger than other PriceRite locations, but still smaller than most other grocery stores nationwide.
