By Land, Air Woman Works to Save Puppies

Thanks to volunteers, an N.J. woman saves dogs from across the country from certain death

Somewhere in rural Southern Ohio 10 puppies got a pardon on a death sentence.

“They’re coming from a shelter where they use a heart stick for putting an animal down and it’s very painful,” says Carol Hard.

She has rescued countless puppies from kill shelters around the country through her Puppies and More rescue in Marlton, N.J. And now Carol’s got 10 of them coming in aboard a small plane to the Lumberton Airport in Burlington County.

“People say 'Why are you rescuing dogs from other states when we’ve got them here?' Well, there really aren’t a lot of puppies here because people spay and neuter,” Carol says.

Foster volunteers like Susan Grande will take two of them in until homes are found.

“You’re saving a life. You’re saving several lives," she says. "It’s amazing how many puppies she’s placed in really good homes.”

After a four hour flight out and a three hour flight back, a volunteer with Pilots and Paws touches down on the runway.

Pilot Tim Ammon and his 10 barking co-pilots are home. They’re a little dazed and they don’t realize how their lives changed because of a pilot and a dog lover who had never met.

“I couldn’t have saved them without you,” Carol said to Tim.

“It's particularly great to know there are people on the ground who are going to put these dogs into good homes who are gonna’ take care of ‘em,” Tim says.

Carol says the pups wouldn't have had a chance if they were left in the shelter. And now they're off to a backyard, food and a future.
