Bus Driver Gets Probation in Fatal Pa. Crash

A school bus driver has been sentenced to three years' probation and 600 hours of community service in an accident that killed an elderly pedestrian in suburban Philadelphia last fall.

The (Pottstown) Mercury reports that 64-year-old Donna Engler of Perkiomenville was sentenced Thursday in Montgomery County Court.

She pleaded guilty in January to a misdemeanor charge of involuntary manslaughter in the Sept. 9 accident that killed 78-year-old Shirley Wilhelm of Pottstown. Police said the victim was out for her morning walk when she was hit as the bus turned right.

Montgomery County Judge Gary Silow said Engler had shown remorse. Engler tearfully apologized to the victim's relatives, saying ``I cry myself to sleep at night wondering how this accident happened.''
