Police surrounded a Target in Northeast Philadelphia early Wednesday morning as burglars tried to escape the building.
Authorities captured two men around 5 a.m. as they tried to evade police by escaping through the roof of the big box store located on Roosevelt Boulevard near Red Lion Road in the city's Bustleton section shortly, according to reports.
Target's security spotted the robbers on surveillance video cameras shortly after the suspects tripped a silent alarm and notified police.
Officers surrounded the store as the suspects tried to escape through the building's roof.
But officials brought in a Philadelphia Fire Department ladder truck to block that possible escape route, while K-9 units searched the store's interior.
Investigators are working to determine if the suspects are connected to six other burglaries at Philly-area Target stores over the past month.
Armed robbers hit the same Bustleton Target, where the standoff took place, in April. Three men waited in a bathroom until the store closed and then exited, brandishing at least one gun, police said. The suspects held several employees at gunpoint, while another worker emptied the registers, officials said. The men fled the area with approximately $10,000 to $30,000 in cash, authorities said.
