Bucks County Teacher Attends Shuttle Launch

A teacher at Council Rock High School South was in Cape Canaveral to watch the Space Shuttle Atlantis take off.

A local science teacher's dreams came true on Friday, according to the Courier Times,

Jerry Fetter, a teacher at Council Rock High School in Bucks County, was in Cape Canaveral, Florida to see the 135th shuttle launch from the Kennedy Space Center.

The paper reports that the 47-year-old astronomy, meteorology, and biology teacher has close ties with NASA. Fetter helped develop learning materials while working with NASA’s Network of Educator Astronaut Teachers.

In 2003, Fetter was a candidate for the Educator Astronaut Program but missed the cut, according to the Courier Times. This is the third time Fetter has been invited to a shuttle launch by NASA but the first one he actually attended.  He watched the Space Shuttle Atlantis take off from a location about three miles away from the launch pad, according to the paper.

The Atlantis launched on Friday at 11:26 a.m. and will return on July 20 after its 12 day mission, according to NASA. NASA will then retire the spacecraft and turn shuttle responsibilities over to Russia and other global partners.
