Bucks Co. Soldier Dies in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense says that the local soldier was killed Saturday by an explosive device.

Military officials have identified a pair of soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense says Sgt. 1st Class Kenneth Elwell, of Holland, Pa. and Pfc. Tyler Springman of Hartland, Maine were killed Saturday by an improvised explosive device in Kandahar
province.

The men were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Seven other soldiers were wounded.

The unit began its one-year deployment to Afghanistan in May.

The Bucks County Courier Times reports Elwell had also been deployed to Iraq twice and Bosnia once. He joined the Army in 1997.
