An 8-year-old suburban Philadelphia boy inexplicably stabbed his great-grandmother with a knife three times Sunday night, according to Cheltenham police.

The 54-year-old woman was treated and released from Jeanes Hospital Sunday night. Because the stabbing was unprovoked, the 8-year-old must undergo a mental health evaluation, police say.

Investigators say the great-grandmother was stabbed three times in the back 9:30 p.m. at the Cheltenham Township home in Montgomery County. Cheltenham police say the woman needed two staples to close one of the wounds.

Authorities say there was no argument before the boy stabbed his gret-grandmother and the boy may suffer from a mental illness.

He was referred to a Montgomery county facility for a mental health evaluation.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
