Police say two 16-year-old boys riding personal watercraft vehicles crashed into each other in the Barnegat Bay this afternoon, leaving one injured.
New Jersey State Police Marine Division says the incident happened around 12:45 p.m. in Berkeley Township, New Jersey. The boys were riding wave runners when they crashed near the Route 37 bridge, according to police.
The injured teen was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with a head injury.
The owner of the business that rented the wave runners in the accident told NBC10's Ted Greenberg that the injured teen was alert when he was brought back to shore.
"He was talking, he was bleeding a little. I don't know the extent," said the man who did not give his name. "It's (the sport) brutally safe, you just have to stay your distance from each other and use common sense."
The second teen was not injured, according to police.
