Roofers Rescued From Hot School Roof

Several roofers had to be rescued from atop an area middle school after one fainted while working in the hot sun as temperatures rose into the high 90s yesterday.

The Delaware County Daily Times reports medics and firefighters responded to Chichester Middle School on Meetinghouse Road shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday after a worker on the roof fainted.

Boothywn Fire Co. Deputy Chief Robert Powers says they found the roofer conscious and took him down in a rescue basket. Crews then said another roofer needed assistance and a third roofer also had to be lowered to the ground in a basket. The fourth person got down on his own.

“They were all conscious when we arrived on scene,” Powers told the paper.

Three were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the roofing company that employed 27 workers at the site. OSHA says United States Roofing Corp. of Norristown, Pa. was last investigated in August 2011 with two violations issued.

OSHA's investigation could take up to six months.
