Booker Announces Criminal Justice Reform Plans

Democrat Cory Booker has announced a wish list for reforming the criminal justice system.

It includes ending mandatory minimum sentences for low-level drug offenses; ending prison privatization; using more federal funds for drug treatment and education programs for prisoners and a โ€œnational conversationโ€ on legalizing marijuana.

The Newark mayor and U.S. Senate candidate appeared in Jersey City at a church where Martin Luther King Jr. spoke weeks before he was assassinated. Wednesday is the 50th anniversary of King's speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.

Booker and other mayors met with President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder at the White House on Tuesday to discuss reducing youth violence.

His Republican opponent, Steve Lonegan, has criticized Booker's record of controlling crime while mayor of New Jersey's largest city.
