Bomb Scare Causes Increase in Airport Security

Passengers flying into Philadelphia International on Friday already noticed some major changes in the airport.

Due to Friday’s worldwide bomb scare, there will be stepped up screening at checkpoints, an increase in specially trained officers and undercover air marshals patrolling the airport, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The new security procedures are the latest change at Philly International, which began using full body scanning equipment on Wednesday.

Though Friday’s incident involved cargo planes, security experts believe that passenger planes remain the prime target of terrorists.

“The effective way to attack a plane and the vulnerability we have as an aviation system, is to the terrorist who brings a bomb on the body to the checkpoint,” said former TSA administrator, Kip Hawley.

The increased security could mean more flight delays in the future.

“Knowing that flights are slowed down and security was tightened more than it is already, I think that would bother me,” said Linda Nguyen of Franklin Park.

But not everyone minds the new security measures.

“It’s alarming but at the same time it’s a good thing,” said Robert Bartilomo of Downingtown. “It’s probably equally comforting and disturbing at the same time.”
