Snow Trash Delays = Big Stink

City says delays should be resolved soon, but another storm may foil those plans

Beside the mounds of lily-white snow still left from the area’s last two storms, walls of trash have begun to form along our streets.

Due to the long dig out process, some Philadelphia neighborhoods haven't seen trash picked up for more than a week.

NBC Philadelphia received a flood of e-mails about the extended delays around the city.

Areas like Belmont Village have been hit hard with the lack of trash collection. Their trash hadn’t been picked up in almost two weeks.

“For the first couple of weeks they couldn’t get down the street or driveways, I should say. Snow was 3-4 feet deep. It’s understandable," said Chuck Lewis of Belmont Village.

But with the last storm a distant memory, residents said the heaps of trash began to reek and were attracting the attention of area rodents and raccoons.

This situation isn’t a complete bad story though, we made a call to the city’s Streets department asking when Belmont Village's trash woes would be resolved and with in the hour trucks were there to begin the long awaited clean up.

Unfortunately, residents still have a long way to go before the schedule is back on track.

Deputy Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams says trash and recycling collections were suspended while the city worked to remove the piles of snow still left by this month's two huge snowstorms.

“We’re running about a half day to a day behind schedule in some areas and in some of those tight driveways," he said. "So we ask again for the citizens to be a little bit patient with us because we’re going to get to you and we haven’t forgotten about you."

Hopefully the collections will be back on schedule before the next projected storm hits us. If not, we suggest you invest in some smelling salts because spring may still be a long way away.
