Black Bear Swims in NJ Woman's Pool

Humans aren’t the only ones trying to beat the sweltering heat this summer. One North Caldwell woman learned that other members of the animal kingdom are finding ways to cool off as well.

Dana Strus of North Caldwell, NJ spotted a black bear swimming in her backyard pool on Tuesday, according to the Livingston Patch.

The Patch reports that Strus saw the animal after arriving back at her home on Willowbrook Drive while with her 3-year-old daughter around 2 p.m.

Strus is also pregnant and due for her second child on Saturday, according to the Patch.

Strus recorded the bear with her cell phone before calling police. The bear escaped however, hopping over the fence into a neighbor’s yard, before police could arrive.

The bear hasn’t been spotted since then.

A Police Officer told the Patch that they’ve urged residents to not feed the bear if they spot it but instead to call police immediately. He also told residents to not leave food or garbage outside and to keep their pets inside.

The American Black Bear is the most common species of bear in the country. While violent incidents involving humans have occurred, they are not overly aggressive or dangerous compared to other bear species.
