Brakes Put on Plans for Bike, Handicap Ramp on Ben Franklin Bridge

Plans to construct a bicycle and handicap ramp on the Ben Franklin Bridge connecting New Jersey and Philadelphia have been pushed back.

The Courier-Post in Cherry Hill reports construction bids for the project were twice the estimated $4 million cost.

Right now, cyclists must carry their bicycles up several stories of stairs under the bridge in Camden if they want to use the walkway to ride to Philadelphia.

The Delaware River Port Authority planned to replace the stairway with a ramp. The ramp was scheduled to open in 2018.

DRPA officials on Wednesday said they rejected bids for the project last week.

Agency engineers say they've hired a consultant to help look into possible design changes that would make the project less expensive.
