Bear Cub Struck, Killed by Car

The bear cub was hit by a car on Route 202 in Branchburg, N.J.

A bear cub is dead after being struck by a car on a northern New Jersey highway.

The cub, which weighed about 150 pounds, was hit Tuesday night on Route 202 in Branchburg. The driver of the car was not injured in the accident.

Residents in the area where the accident occurred had been warned earlier Tuesday that a black bear had been spotted near the highway.

But Department of Environmental Protection officials say there's no way to confirm whether that animal and the cub killed in the accident were the same bear, noting that the cub had not been previously tagged.
