Barge Slams Into Bridge in Salem County

A stretch of Route 49 in Salem County has been reopened after a barge slammed into a bridge Sunday morning.

Officials say a high tide caused the barge to crash into the south side of the Veterans of Salem County Memorial Bridge around 10 a.m. One end of the barge was lodged underneath the bridge.

The crash prompted officials to shut down Route 49 in both directions between Salem City and Pennsville Township around 11:30 a.m.

The bridge was reopened shortly before 4 p.m. Officials have not yet revealed however whether the barge was removed.

The US Coast Guard is currently handling the investigation.
