Bail Set at $1M for Man Accused of Killing Mother

The son of a woman found dead in the Ocean County home they shared has been charged with her murder.

Brian Cassidy, 41, was charged with first degree murder stemming from the death of 61-year-old Gail Conway.

Lakewood police found Conway’s body Tuesday morning in her bed at her adult community home at Country Place Condominiums in Lakewood, New Jersey. Conway's boss at CVS called police to say she had not shown up for work and could not be reached by phone.

Police did not say how Conway died but blood evidence and the condition of Conway’s body made it clear that she was a victim of a homicide, according to investigators.

Authorities say Cassidy was arrested after he was spotted driving his mother's car on Lakewood-Allenwood Road in neighboring Howell Township around 5:29 p.m. Authorities had been looking for the Grey 2013 Honda Civic after realizing it was missing from the victim's home.

Police followed Cassidy to a park where he got out to walk his dog. He was taken into custody without incident.

Detectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Lakewood Police Department have not revealed how they determined that Cassidy is allegedly responsible for his mother’s murder. A motive for the slaying has not been disclosed.

Bail was set at $1 million for Cassidy.
