Baby Dies Days After She's Nearly Suffocated by Mom in NJ

The father of a baby girl whose mother allegedly rolled over onto her while she was under the influence of drugs says the child has died.

Marco Mejia says 8-month old Olaia Marie Mejia died at a hospital on Friday morning. The child had been found unconscious at her mother's Ventnor home on Jan. 3.

A cause of death has not been disclosed.

The girl's mother, 31-year-old Lisa Scalia, remained jailed Sunday on $100,000 cash bail. She initially was charged with child endangerment and drug possession, but may now face more serious charges following her daughter's death.

Authorities have said Scalia had 34 bags of heroin and 10 oxycodone pills.

It wasn't clear Sunday if she has retained an attorney.
