Atlantic County has seen a 12 percent increase in the number of families on food stamps in the wake of Atlantic City casinos closing.
More than one-third of the county's 275,000 residents are on some type of assistance.
Family and Economic Assistance director Forrest Gilmore told The Press of Atlantic City a lot of those seeking help are part-time workers who are eligible for food stamps.
Gilmore says Atlantic County residents collected about $60.4 million in food aid through the SNAP program in 2014. They received about $21 million in the first four months of 2015.
The county is hiring 10 new caseworkers to meet the need.
