Athletic Director Shoots Husband's Truck

N.J. Athletic Director arrested and suspended for firing gun at pickup truck

A high school athletic director in Audubon has been suspended after allegedly shooting several bullets into her husband's unoccupied pickup.

Covely used her husband’s 9mm handgun to riddle his empty Ford pickup truck with bullets in the Sewell section of Mantua Friday morning, police say. No one was hurt in the shooting.

Donna Covely was arrested Friday in Mantua, where she lives. She faces charges of making terroristic threats, criminal mischief and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

The 55-year-old also serves as assistant principal at Audubon High School. She's worked in the district for about eight years.

She's been suspended from her $112,000 a year job. In a meeting Monday it was decided that other school officials would take on Covely’s responsibilities for now.

"It is remarkable how many people already stepped forward and said if we need anything they are willing to help," Audubon School Superintendent Don Borden told the Courier Post.

Borden said that the district is extremely concerned about the truck shooting, though the incident is private and unrelated to her work responsibilities.

It is a private domestic matter; however, the charges are such that it has led to her suspension and I imagine that will remain in place until the next step in the legal process takes place," Borden said.

The district’s Board of Education will further discuss the situation in its scheduled meeting Wednesday night.
