1 Dead, 1 Critical in South Philly Shooting

A man was killed while another is in critical condition after a shooting in South Philadelphia Wednesday night.

Wayne Jones, 35, and Craig Washington, 56, were on the 600 block of Winton Street around 7:51 p.m. when an unidentified gunman opened fire.

Jones was struck in the head while Washington was struck in the stomach. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. Washington was taken to Jefferson University Hospital where he is currently in critical condition.

Police told NBC10 Washington is an off-duty SEPTA driver who was in the area visiting his mother. He normally checks on his mother on a daily basis, according to investigators. Based on that information, police believe Washington was an innocent bystander.

"He just loved children and loved his job," said Eric Devore, Washington's friend. "He is an outstanding citizen for this community."

After the shooting, the suspect, described as a man standing 6-feet-tall and wearing a dark brown jacket, was spotted running west on Snyder Avenue from 7th Street, according to investigators.

Investigators found 26 shell casings at the scene of the shooting. They also said two semi-automatic handguns were used.

Police continue to investigate.
