Two police officers suffered leg injuries when a part blew off a burning station wagon overnight.
The 15th District police officers were injured while assisting the Philadelphia Fire Department on a garage fire on the 1200 block of Arrott Street in the Frankford section of the city around 1:30 a.m. Monday.
“They found a garage that was fully engulfed in flames,” said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.
A Volvo station wagon was on fire inside the garage.
“While extinguishing the fire they heard a loud pop,” said Small. “And then a piece of metal from the rear bumper of the vehicle traveled about 100 feet — at a high rate of speed — striking two police officers in their legs.”
A 32-year-old officer suffered a broken lower leg while a 28-year-old needed stitches in his leg, said Small. Both officers were treated at Aria-Torresdale Hospital and were expected to be OK.
An initial investigation revealed that the 1-foot long shock absorber blew off the Volvo’s bumper and missed several firefighters before striking the officers, said Small.

The cause of the blaze remained under investigation early Monday.
