Motel Double Murder Solved as Suspect Commits Suicide

Two sisters were shot in the head inside a Berks County motel Tuesday

The murder of two sisters inside a Berks County motel has been solved.

Carolyn Levan, 60, and her 57-year-old sister Charlene were found shot to death inside the office at the Hillside Motel in Amity Township, Pa. around 6 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Both women suffered a single gunshot wound to the head, according to officials.

For days the only information that police had to go on was that Carolyn was a permanent resident of the motel and the claims of several people questioned by police.

The mystery was described as an "enigma" by Amity Twp. Police Chief Kent Shuebrook.

That enigma was solved Friday as officials announced that they had found the person responsible.

Investigators say Christopher Deiter shot both women and then fled the motel. He later committed suicide inside another motel in Lititz, Pa. on Thursday.

The 38-year-old was staying at the motel and left his notebook computer and an empty box of 20-gauge shotgun shells inside the room, according to authorities.

Police in Lititz say they found the same shotgun used in the Levan murders next to Deiter's body. They also found a coat that was taken from the Hillside Motel office.

A possible motive is still a mystery. Investigators say Deiter may have just snapped.
