Arrest Made in Fatal I-95 Hit-&-Run

Police have made an arrest in a fatal hit-and-run on I-95 in Northeast Philadelphia.

On January 18, shortly before midnight, police say Gerald Martin, 65, of Philadelphia, was walking on I-95 northbound near mile marker 26. Suddenly, police say, he was struck by a tractor trailer driven by 46-year-old Ward Bennett III of Lumberton, New Jersey. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say Bennett fled north on 95 past the Cottman Avenue exit. Police later found his tractor trailer in Lumberton, New Jersey and towed it back to Philadelphia. After investigating the incident, charges were filed against Bennett. Police say he surrendered to police on Monday. He is charged with accidents involving death or personal injury. He is currently being held at the 15th District, awaiting his arraignment.
