Army Corps Cancels Margate Beach Replenishment Bidding

The bidding process for beach replenishment projects in Margate and Longport has been canceled while the issue is argued in court.

The Army Corps of Engineers announced this week that it has canceled bids for the shore protection program. A spokesman told The Press of Atlantic City that awarding contracts with the legal challenges unresolved would pose a risk for the government.

The corps says it will advertise a new solicitation for the project once the legal pathway is cleared.

Margate and some beachfront property owners sued in federal court over the dune project, saying eminent domain proceedings weren't followed. Margate's business administrator tells the newspaper a "one-size-fits-all" approach for New Jersey's coastline doesn't offer the best protection for the community.
