A motorist who thought a member of Gov. Chris Christie's motorcade had cut him off followed the vehicle into a Jersey Shore town, but the matter was peacefully resolved.
Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak tells The Star-Ledger that the governor was on his way to his summer residence in Island Beach State Park when the incident occurred. Drewniak said there was no contact between the vehicles and the motorist was not speeding or driving aggressively.
Christie was not in the sport utility vehicle that was being followed. He was in another SUV that continued on to the residence, while the SUV being followed pulled into the Seaside Park police department's parking lot.
Drewniak said the state trooper driving that SUV and the motorist who was following it then got out of their vehicles and discussed what had happened. No charges were filed.
Christie's motorcade usually involves the governor as a passenger in the first vehicle, which is followed closely by a second vehicle. Both vehicles are driven by state troopers who are dressed in plain clothes.
Drewniak did not know where the initial incident took place or where Christie was coming from.
Seaside Park police Cpl. Steve Shadiak told the newspaper that a motor vehicle stop involving the state police occurred early Monday. He said state police did not inform Seaside Park police about the incident, nor did they bring anyone into police headquarters under arrest.
