And the Name Is…the Union

MLS announced name and colors of Philly's new soccer team

Monday was a big day for all Philly-area soccer fans. Major League Soccer (MLS) unveiled the name, colors and logo for our new "football" team.

And the team name is... drum roll please... the Philadelphia Union. The new team starts play in March as the newest member of the MLS.

The international-soccer-inspired-named Union will wear shades of blue and gold.

The team crest includes some odes to the Original 13 colonies and the American Revolution. A rattlesnake is positioned inside a ring of 13 stars with the motto "Jungite aut Perite," which is an old motto of American patriots that is Latin for "Join or Die."

The team name and colors were among the worst-kept secret ever. Hardcore fans like the Sons of Ben (the team already has a fan club even though they've yet to kick a ball) shouldn't be too surprised with the Union name.

The club held a rally Monday in front of Philadelphia City Hall with Mayor Michael Nutter to make things official. They let fans throughout the area know all the details about MLS' 16th team.

Now that the announcement was made, fans only have to wait 10 more months until kickoff inside the team's brand-spankin' new 18,500 seat stadium. The facility is currently under construction at the foot of the Commodore Barry Bridge in Chester, Pa.

Season tickets start at $275 for 17 games and are already on sale at the team's Web site.
