Allentown Police Chief's Son Goes on Trial for Road Rage Incident

The son of an eastern Pennsylvania police chief is going on trial on charges that he pointed a gun at county detectives.

The Morning Call reported that the trial of 22-year-old Christopher Fitzgerald, 22, son of Allentown police chief Joel Fitzgerald, is set to begin Tuesday. He is charged with simple assault and reckless endangerment.

Prosecutors said he aimed a loaded gun at two undercover detectives following an alleged road-rage incident Aug. 29 that began in Allentown and ended with a tense standoff in nearby Whitehall Township.

Defense attorney Jack McMahon said Fitzgerald never pointed the gun at detectives and was holding it out of fear for his family's safety. His girlfriend and 1-year-old son were in the car. He said Fitzgerald did not know the men were police.

Fitzgerald had a permit to carry the weapon.
