Alleged Drunk Driver Hits, Kills NJ Woman

Authorities say a suspected drunken driver struck and killed a woman who was trying to get into the back seat of a parked car in northern New Jersey.

Robert Santiago of Clifton is charged with death by auto.

Police tell The Record newspaper that the crash occurred around 2:15 a.m. Sunday on Rutherford Boulevard. The 47-year-old Clifton woman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later. Her name was not released, pending notification of relatives.

The 26-year-old Santiago was not hurt in the crash, but authorities say his car was "completely mangled.''

Santiago remained in custody Sunday afternoon, and it was not known if he had retained a lawyer.
