Alleged Baby Killer Surrenders to Police

A man wanted in connection with the death of a 7-month-old in his care turned himself, according to Delaware State Police.

Police say 44-year-old James Hammond of Harrington surrendered to police early Friday morning.

Hammond and his girlfriend, the infant's aunt, were caring for Aubri Thompson last month while her parents vacationed. They say the couple took the unresponsive infant to Milford Memorial Hospital, where she died.

Police say Hammond was alone with the girl on Feb. 27, when he says she fell out of a crib, but they didn't seek medical help until the next day. Her death was ruled a homicide by blunt force trauma and police say her injuries were not consistent with such a fall.

Hammond was arraigned and charged with murder by abuse or neglect. He's been committed to James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $100,000 bail.
