Last call will be the final call for a well-known family-owned South Jersey tavern that's shutting its doors after six decades.
Kay's Red Eagle Tavern at Route 38 and Chapel Avenue in Cherry Hill will close for good Friday morning, owner Dori D'Alfonso said.
D'Alfonso's grandparents opened the tavern in 1950 and it's been in the family since. She's run the place for the past eight years.
"It sucks," she said of the decision to close. D'Alfonso said it's been tough to compete with other bars and restaurants in the area. The pub sits a short distance from the Cherry Hill Mall and Garden State Park shopping center.
The park, formerly home to a horse racetrack, used to be a boon for business with lots of jockeys and gamblers stopping by the dark brown brick-clad bar. When the track closed in 2001, business was never the same, D'Alfonso said.
The family has a buyer lined up for the property, but D'Alfonso wasn't sure what will take its place.
