Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown discusses her proposal to offer ad space on Philadelphia school buses, in chambers on Thursday
With pink slips already handed out to hundreds of teachers and employees, the cash-strapped Philadelphia School District needs all the help it can get. City Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown says she has a solution: Ad space on school buses.
With a $61 million school budget deficit looming, Brown introduced a bill to the City Council that proposes allowing advertisements on the side of Philadelphia school buses. Brown says the bus-ad idea will prevent raising property taxes by generating unconventional revenue stream.
“The idea for the bill came from our neighbors in New Jersey, who passed similar legislation in 2011,” Brown said in a statement. “Property owners have made it clear to City Council over the last 2 budget cycles that they are tapped out. To the extent that we can find new additional dollars for our schools without raising property taxes, I believe we owe it to our students and taxpayers to have that conversation.”
Brown’s proposal comes a week after councilmembers put up a bill to keep Philadelphia bars open an hour later, giving the extra liquor tax revue earned from the 2-3 a.m. to the school district.
