Abu-Jamal Moved to Prison Northwest of Philly

Convicted killer moved to medium-security prison

Former death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal has been transferred from a maximum-security prison in western Pennsylvania to a medium-security institution across the state.

Corrections Department spokeswoman Susan Bensinger confirmed Thursday that Abu-Jamal is now at the Mahanoy state prison in Frackville, about 80 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

The convicted killer of Philadelphia police Officer Daniel Faulkner had spent the past 16 years at Greene state prison in Waynesburg, more than 260 miles west of Philadelphia. Abu-Jamal had also served time in other facilities.

Abu-Jamal was sentenced to death for the 1981 murder. But a federal appeals court recently ordered a new sentencing hearing because of flawed jury instructions. Last week, the Philadelphia district attorney instead agreed to a life term for Abu-Jamal.

Bensinger says Abu-Jamal was transferred Wednesday.
