A transgender teenager in central Pennsylvania running for prom king will be allowed to attend his prom Saturday night along with his girlfriend, the American Civil Liberties Union announced Friday.

The ACLU had threatened to sue if the school district didn’t allow Issak Wolfe, a student at Red Lion Area Senior High School in York County, to run for prom king.

The student born Sierra Stambaugh has self-identified as Issak Wolfe for several years.

The ACLU contends Wolfe has a right to attend Saturday's prom with a girlfriend and to be on the ballot for prom king.

The 18-year-old was upset to find his name was listed under prom queen on a school ballot. He has been campaigning for prom king.

The civil rights advocacy group threatened to take action even though the student is registered under his female birth name and has acknowledged his diploma will be issued in that female name, too.

Red Lion schools Superintendent Scott Deisley didn't immediately return requests for comment.

Wolfe is in therapy and plans to undergo a physical transition.

The student also wants the district to call him Issak Wolfe and let him wear a boy's cap-and-gown at graduation May 3. But the ACLU says the school has yet to provide a definitive response as to whether Issak’s male name will be read at graduation, along with allowing him to wear the males’ gown.
