The year 2011 ended just the way the four years preceding it did: with Atlantic City's casinos taking in less money than they had the year before.
Five years ago, Atlantic City's casinos were at their peak, taking in $5.2 billion. That was before Pennsylvania and neighboring states started opening casinos.
Figures due to be released Tuesday afternoon by the state Division of Gaming Enforcement are expected to show that total has fallen to just north of $3 billion as of the end of 2011.
Atlantic City is counting on the soon-to-open Revel casino to restore some of its luster _ and lost revenue.
The resort city's also pushing non-gambling attractions like gourmet restaurants, big-name entertainment, spas and shopping.
