Losing a World Series bet paid off for one Philadelphia food bank.
Philabundance and the Food Bank for New York City made a little World Series wager.
Unfortunately since the Yankees won, the Philadelphia Regional Produce Market had to deliver a truckload of produce to New York on Tuesday.
Too bad the Phillies didn't win. If the Phightins came out victorious then the Hunts Point Terminal Market in N.Y.C. would donate one truckload of food to Philabundance.
By the way -- more than 10 tons of food fit on a truck.
To throw salt on the wound, truck loaders wore Yankee gear and the truck traveled up to the Big Apple covered in Yankees signs.
At least it was for a good cause, right?

Well, in the spirit of the holidays, everyone wound up winning (despite the Yankee gear). With a greater need for food in this tough economy and surprisingly good sportsmanship, the directors of each produce market decided to make it more of a fair trade than a lost bet.
Tuesday morning one truck filled with produce left the N.Y. food market and headed south on the Jersey Turnpike while one left Philly and headed north -- the ETA for each truck was 10.
It begged to be asked -- why didn't they just keep their food and call it even maybe saved on some gas? We aren't entirely sure.
So in the end, even though the Phillies lost, Philabundance won.
Maybe a friendship between the City of Brotherly Love and the Big Apple really is possible.
