9-Year-Old Accidentally Shot by Younger Child: Police

Pennsylvania State Police say a 9-year-old girl was shot in the lower torso apparently when another child picked up a loaded 12-gauge shotgun and it accidentally went off.

The shooting occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday inside a small pavilion near a pond at a Lackawannock Township residence in Mercer County. The girl's father was fishing in the pond at the time. Police say the man told them that prior to fishing, he had been using the gun to shoot animals.

Police say the gun was left unattended, and two children under the age of 5 were playing nearby when one of them picked up the firearm. The girl, who was not identified, was taken by ambulance to a site where she could be flown to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.
