83-Year-Old Woman Beaten to Death With Hammer

Suspect has been charged with homicide.

Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania have arrested a suspect in a hammer attack that killed an elderly woman and injured her husband around 6:30 Saturday evening.

Police say the couple, James and Lucy Born, were violently assaulted by a man with a hammer in their Spring Township home. It was three hours from the time of the attack until the male victim, James Born -- who was knocked unconscious -- was heard yelling for help by a neighbor, according to authorities.

James Born, 86-year-old, was rushed to Reading Hospital, where he was treated for head trauma. His wife, 83-year-old wife, however, was pronounced dead at the scene when police arrived.

A man from the 100 block of Blandon Ave. in Ontelaunee Township was identified by police as a suspect.

Manuel Carrero
, 36, was apprehended at his home and taken into custody around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. He is charged with criminal homicide, first- and third-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault, according to authorities.

Police say the suspect often worked on the Born’s computer and is an acqauintance of their son. There were no signs of a forced entrance.

District Attorney John Adams called the crime "a senseless act of violence perpetrated on an elderly couple.''
