76 Finally Reopens After Deadly Crash

Major delays on 76 west, eastbound lanes closed

A serious accident on 76-East shut down the expressway Friday. 

The accident happened around 9:30 a.m.

The eastbound side was closed from Gulph Mills to 476. One lane on the westbound side remained open as crews cleared the accident.
  
The accident involved two cars and a tractor trailer one mile east of the Conshohoken Curve. 

The accident involved a tractor trailer and six or seven cars.

There is one person confirmed dead and another had to be airlifted.

David Schreffler of Fort washington was pronounced dead by the coroner.  At this time, no charges have been filed.
 
Joseph Maylish was extricated from the vehicle and flown to temple hospital for treatment. 

The delays extended on the westbound side from Girard Avenue to the Conshohoken Curve, with an estimated 45 minute delay.

NBC 10 was on the scene and spoke to motorists who were stuck in the back-up on 76.  Some who were headed to work during the morning rush were working from their cars.

Sun glare is being considered as a possible cause for the deadly crash.

For now what police know is in the course of the crash an automobile became pinned under both the tractor trailerand an SUV when all three vehicles collided.

After the initial impact three additional vehicles became struck.
