74-Year-Old Surrenders Car in Hit-and-Run Case

Woman's lawyer says the 74-year-old did not know that someone was killed in Upper Providence accident

The attorney for a 74-year-old Gilbertsville woman says that she was involved in an accident in Upper Providence Wednesday, but was not aware that someone was killed.

Attorney Joseph P. Green says in a statement that Patricia Maurer “did not realize that she had been in an accident until she arrived home on Wednesday afternoon and observed damage to her car.”

The hit-and-run accident in which 26-year-old Kristy Bender was struck and killed happened 1:34 p.m. Wednesday in front of 1232 Township Line Road, according to Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the young woman fled the scene, authorities say.

Green says that his client and her family surrendered Maurer’s car to police Wednesday night and “look forward to an opportunity to meet with, and to continue to cooperate with, investigators.”

Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Kevin Steele tells NBC Philadelphia that Maurer did not turn herself in and neither the police nor the District Attorney’s Office have been able to speak with the woman yet.

Steele says that police were getting a search warrant together before Maurer’s family surrendered the car Wednesday.  And when investigators went to her house, Maurer’s family told them that her attorney advised her not to speak to them, according to Steele.

Steele says no one has been charged and that the accident is still under investigation.
