7-Year-Old Girl Rescued From Schuylkill

A 7-year-old girl is in the hospital after nearly drowning in the Schuylkill River.

Authorities say that the girl and her family were swimming in the river in Upper Providence Township around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday when she was suddenly swept away by a strong current.

She was then in the water for at least 20 minutes before people on a nearby bridge spotted her floating in the river.

She was picked up by boaters and taken to Phoenixville Hospital. While her exact condition is unknown, authorities say that the girl was awake and talking while in the hospital.

One witness believes that the girl was swept between one to two miles downstream.
