Guy With Big Knife Jumps Onto Counter, Stabs Center City Philadelphia 7-Eleven Clerk

Man attacks clerk in 7-Eleven store in the shadow of City Hall

A man looking for packs of cigarettes pulled out a large knife and stabbed a 7-Eleven clerk in Center City Philadelphia Sunday morning.

The man asked the clerk at the convenience store on Market Street – across the street from City Hall – for Newport cigarettes shortly before 6:30 a.m. Sunday, then asked for five more packs, Philadelphia police said. He then pulled a large knife from his pants pocket, jumped on the counter and stabbed the 58-year-old worker in the head, neck and shoulder.

The clerk managed to the wrestle with his attacker – a bearded man in his late 40s who stands around 6 feet tall – knocking the attacker off the counter and onto the floor, police said.

The attacker then ran from the store empty-handed leaving the knife, a hoodie and the cigarettes behind, investigators said.

The clerk was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital and admitted for observation in stable condition, police said.

Police released a surveillance image of the suspect, who they said appeared to be homeless. He wore a dark shirt with a vertical stripe down the sleeves, blue jeans and black and white sneakers.
