Law enforcement sweeps conducted in Atlantic City following a recent spike in violence there resulted in 58 arrests and the seizure of numerous weapons and illegal drugs.

Authorities seized at least one gun during nine of the 12 sweeps conducted over the past three weeks by the city police department's vice, intelligence and tactical team units and members of the Atlantic City Task Force.

The latter group, which is overseen by the state Attorney General's office, includes city police and officers from county, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

“This is a great example of The Atlantic City Police Department and The Atlantic City Task Force pooling our resources in an effort to deter crime and increase the quality of life for Atlantic City residents,” Lieutenant James Sarkos of the ACPD Special Investigations Section said.

Authorities say they seized a shotgun and 11 handguns overall, along with thousands of dollars worth of illegal drugs.
