5 People Rescued From Center City Elevator After Being Trapped for Hours

No one was seriously injured, according to authorities.

Philadelphia firefighters rescued five people from a Center City elevator Sunday after they were trapped for almost four hours.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. inside the high-rise apartment building at 1500 Locust Street. Investigators say an elevator stopped working while three men and two women were inside. The group was riding the elevator up to their apartments.

Firefighters helped the stranded riders climb up and out of the elevator through its ceiling and across a 2-foot gap to a second elevator.

“They had a screen they had to get through, two railings to jump over, it was tight,” Philadelphia Fire Department Battalion Chief Bob Lewandowski said.

No one was seriously injured, according to authorities.
