Five people were hospitalized with smoke inhalation after a fire destroyed a home in New Castle County.

It happened around 9:20 p.m. at 33 Elsmere Boulevard Friday.

Investigators say a 38-year-old woman and her 4-year-old child were both taken to Christiana Hospital with smoke inhalation. The two are listed in serious condition.

A firefighter and two police officers who rescued them also suffered smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
