34 Jersey Shore Beaches Under Water Quality Advisory for Elevated Bacteria Levels

3 New Jersey beaches closed, 31 water quality advisories due to elevated bacteria levels

Officials have closed three beaches in New Jersey and have issued water quality advisories for 31 others because of elevated bacteria levels.

The state Environmental Protection Department on Tuesday found extremely high levels at Beachwood Beach West, Summit Beach and West Beach in Toms River on Tuesday.

The closings followed heavy rain, which created pollution runoff into streams that feed into rivers and bays.

The water quality advisories encompass beaches in Atlantic, Cape May, Ocean and Monmouth counties.

The state will continue testing to determine when bacteria levels drop.
